"Can you publish a book for free"
Yes, it is possible, but you may have to compromise on quality.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸?
You must first write the book. You'll also have to use software such as MS Office on your computer, this works well for creating your manuscript.
𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, you could do it yourself or get a friend to do it, but unless they're a professional, it won't be to a high standard. A book is like a diamond. The first draft is raw and uncut. Its value is only realised when cut, polished and put into some kind of setting.
𝟮. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, a skilled job, even if you're good at, it's pretty much impossible to proofread your own copy. Reviewers and readers will forgive one or two typos that get through, but they then become frustrated if there are too many.
𝟯. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿, you can do this via Canva, but unless you're a graphic designer, the quality will show. Graphic designers spend years honing their skills and this shows in the designs they provide. As much as we like to think people don't judge a book by its cover, the reality is that they do.
𝟰. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀, you should order some. This is probably the biggest mistake you can make. I have caught so many problems with a book once it's in print. Especially with MS Word when converting it to a pdf.
𝟱. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, the test drivers for your book and will pick up on things no one else has done, making your book much more readable, and saleable as a result.
𝟲. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 using sites like KDP Amazon and Ingram Spark, and once reviewed it will go live. It costs nothing, however, it isn't always the best solution.
𝟳. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁, there are many people selling their books successfully and more profitably from their own websites. They do this by ordering a print run, ensuring that they get the best value in terms of the quality of finish and price for their book.
If your aim is to just publish a book, then congratulations, job done.
If your goal is to sell your book, your job is just beginning, and you're way behind until buyers know it exists!
One thing I suggest to my clients is that they build their author platform as they write their book. Amazon and Ingram Spark are massive marketplaces, with literally millions of books for sale.
It's not a case of "𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦". They won't.
Amazon and Ingram Spark will show people the books that they know people will buy over those that don't sell. It's a business after all. Your job is to send people to Amazon's and Ingram Spark’s website by building up an online presence.
